Common Applications Of Samarium Cobalt Magnets

Samarium cobalt magnets are not as powerful as super-strong neodymium magnets but they do have some significant advantages. Samarium cobalt magnets work over a wider temperature range, have superior temperature coefficients and have much greater corrosion resistance. Samarium cobalt magnets certainly come into their own at high operating temperatures and will begin to outperform special high-temperature neodymium magnets from 150oC. However, regular neodymium magnets have a maximum operating temperature of 80oC.

Samarium cobalt magnets do not just excel at high temperatures, they maintain their magnetic properties even at temperatures below absolute zero (-273 oC) making them popular for cryogenic applications.

As most grades of samarium cobalt contain little or no iron, this gives them an excellent resistance to corrosion whereas neodymium magnets typically contain 60-75% iron. Samarium cobalt magnets, like neodymium magnets, provide a lot of magnetic strength (although not as much as neodymium magnets) when compared to their size and because they are rare-earth magnets they have an extremely high-resistance to demagnetisation from external magnetic fields.

These characteristics make samarium cobalt suitable for applications for the marine, automotive, aerospace, military and manufacturing industries including applications such as:

Motors and electric motors included in competitive racing of powered miniature cars

In miniature car racing the cars are guided by grooves or slots in the track. Samarium Cobalt magnets help turn the motors in the cars, allowing them to run along the tracks.

Turbo machinery

Magnetic bearings are used in industrial applications, such as turbo machinery. A magnetic bearing is a type of bearing that supports a load using magnetic levitation. Magnetic bearings support moving parts without physical contact. The power generated can levitate a rotating shaft and allow relative motion with very low friction and no mechanical wear.  Samarium Cobalt magnets are suited to these applications as they can perform well under extreme temperatures and critical conditions.

Travelling-wave tubes

A travelling wave tube is a specialised vacuum tube that is used in electronics to amplify radio frequency signals. Samarium Cobalt magnets are used support the device by focusing the electrons into a beam and ensure electricity passes through the tube, maintaining performance under high temperatures.

Pump couplings

The purpose of pump couplings is to connect pumps to motors to transfer power efficiently. A magnetic coupling uses magnetic forces to transfer the power from one shaft to another without any contact. The magnetic coupling works by using the power generated by Samarium Cobalt magnets. These magnetic couplings can be used to connect gear pumps, screw pumps and centrifugal pumps.

Sensors

A magnetic sensor is a device that can convert various magnetic fields into electrical signal outputs. The magnetic field is produced by the permanent magnets applied to the sensor. This device is then used in various sensors such as: throttle position sensors, motor speed control sensors, sensors for mobile device applications, switches and much more. Due to the high temperatures present in these applications, Samarium Cobalt magnets are a popular choice.
