Using Magnets on Model Trains

Magnets can be used in several ways in model making and we love seeing how our customers use our magnets in their hobby! Recently one customer, Ken, kindly got in touch to show how our magnets can be used on model trains.

Model trains saw a huge growth in popularity throughout the UK’s lockdown and have seen several people rekindle their love for model trains, which has led to more and more hacks and tips being discovered.

Ken, decided to use magnets as an easy solution when looking to create a more secure between models.

Using our 4mm dia x 1mm thick N42 Neodymium Magnets with 0.25kg Pull Ken started by gluing a magnet to a small plastic card attached to the lower of the links. Although a simple task, Ken urges people to remember to use plastic tweezers to avoid the magnets attracting to the tweezers.

Having stuck the magnet firmly in place, be sure to leave it to dry for 24 hours.

Once the glue has dried it’s time to run the engine and watch your magnets attract and secure together, creating a firm hold between models.

By adding these magnets Ken has made it much easier to separate the models, as previously he would have to attempt to pick up the link with tweezers or fine hooked wire.

Ken has used these magnets on O gauge models.

We would like to thank Ken for getting in touch and sharing his story with us. If you are currently working on a project or could use some advice, our team would love to hear from you!
