Car manufacturer Ford has filed a new patent and it may just be the change you’ve been waiting for since you passed your driving test. Ford recently filed a patent application for a magnetic bed to keep items secure in the bed of trucks.
According to reports from, Motor Authority, the patent shows an attractive design that would allow Fords pickup trucks to literally keep things together.
The design uses between four and six magnets, embedded in the truck’s bed. These magnets would be able to be moved, either manually or with servos, the magnets would also be able to be switched on and off individually.
Although it would be amazing for truck owners to fill the bed of their truck with tools and not have to worry about a loose spanner or hammer flying out onto the road, there is no guarantee that we will see a magnetic truck bed in production any time soon.
A New Magnetic Tie-Down System
Another part of Ford’s patent application shows a magnetic tie-down system, which would be used in estate cars and vans rather than pickup trucks. A magnetic tie-down system would allow extra magnets to be placed in necessary areas.
If this idea came to life, it could potentially allow vehicle owners to move magnets around the cabin or boot of your van or car. These magnets would need to be incredibly strong, to prevent items from becoming loose in the vehicle.
Can’t Wait Why Not Make a DIY Magnetic Truck Bed
If you’re hooked by the idea of having a magnetic bed in the back of your pickup truck and can’t wait any longer to see if this patent will be brought into production, well then we have a simple DIY solution for you.
Our NeoFlex® Flexible Neodymium Magnetic Sheets made with 3M™ Self-Adhesive can be cut exactly to size to fit any pickup bed and are ten times stronger than any other commercially available sheet.
To ensure that the grip remains secure, we recommend allowing between 24 to 32 hours for the adhesive to cure.
