Door Closures With Countersunk Magnets

We have recently been working with Peter Bell Architects on their recent installation. They were looking to build a ‘wall’ to hide the base of a staircase to the basement of an early Victorian house. The ‘wall’ appears to look like a wall of panels and cupboard doors, where in fact one of the panels pivots to reveal a staircase.

They were after a solution that would create a sleek and subtle closure, to echo the wall illusion. So, how did our magnets help?

Our experts advised they purchase:
20mm dia x 10mm thick x 5.2mm Countersunk Neodymium Magnet- North
20mm dia x 10mm thick x 5.2mm Countersunk Neodymium Magnet- South
10mm dia head x 4.8mm dia thread x 32mm long Stainless Steel Screws

Our range of stainless steel screws provide a superior performance when used with our countersunk magnets, as the magnetic flux is not absorbed by the screw, allowing for maximum performance. Using standard steel screws will allow magnetic flux to travel through the screw rather than pull against the other magnet or steel plate, which results in a loss of performance.

Countersunk magnets are ideal for this application due to the countersunk central hole, which allows them to be fixed to non-magnetic surfaces with a screw and in this case birch plywood panels. To install a countersunk magnet, you simply recess a hole into the non-magnetic surface and screw into place. In this application this was done by screwing one of the north countersunk magnets into the birch plywood door and screwing the opposing south countersunk magnet into the door frame. Drilling the initial hole ensured that the magnets sat flush on both the door and the door frame.

When the door is pushed close the north and south countersunk magnets attract and keep the door shut. As the magnets sit flush within the door and the door frame it provides a secure closure with a clean aesthetic, perfect for creating the wall illusion.

As you can see from the customers pictures the solution was a success! Countersunk magnets are very versatile and popular within our customer applications. Learn about their uses here.
