Experiment: Build Your Own Electromagnet
Now, let’s embark on an exciting experiment to build your electromagnet using simple materials found at home.
You will need:
- A large iron nail or bolt
- Insulated copper wire
- A power source (such as a battery)
- Alligator clips (optional)
- Iron filings (optional)
Follow these steps to conduct the experiment:
- Wrap the insulated copper wire tightly around the iron nail or bolt, leaving a few inches of wire loose at each end.
- Connect one end of the wire to the positive terminal of the power source and the other end to the negative terminal, using alligator clips.
- Energise your electromagnet by turning on the power source. You should observe the nail or bolt attracting small magnetic objects, indicating the presence of a magnetic field.
- For a visual demonstration, sprinkle iron filings around the electromagnet. The filings will align along the magnetic field lines, showing the magnetic field’s shape and direction.
